Quick answer

A medium OREO Blizzard is 820 calories and a medium vanilla shake 660. Every soft-serve treat contains milk, and DQ does not call any Blizzard gluten-free.

How many calories are in Dairy Queen Blizzards?

A Dairy Queen Blizzard has about 340 to 460 calories as a mini, 560 to 860 as a small, 720 to 1,220 as a medium and 940 to 1,650 as a large, depending on the flavor. The table below lists 12 flavors from DQ's official U.S. nutrition list, which DQ says is current as of Aug. 26, 2024.

Two patterns stand out. First, size matters more than flavor: a large OREO Blizzard (1,050) has three times the calories of a mini (340). Second, flavors with dough, brownie or cheesecake pieces run highest. Reese's Pieces Cookie Dough tops the list at every size, while the candy flavors (OREO, Butterfinger, Snickers and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups) sit near the bottom, at 800 to 820 for a medium.

New and seasonal flavors, like the Holiday Cookie Swap Blizzards that launched Nov. 2, 2026, are not on the 2024 list. DQ posts their nutrition on each item's page at dairyqueen.com. For Blizzard prices by size, see our Dairy Queen Blizzard prices guide.

Dairy Queen menu with calories: cones, sundaes and shakes

If you want DQ soft serve with fewer calories than a Blizzard, cones and sundaes are the way to go. A small vanilla cone is 220 calories and a small sundae 240 to 300 depending on the topping, against 560 or more for a small Blizzard. Shakes land in between: a small vanilla shake is 520, and turning any shake into a malt adds 60 to 110 calories depending on size.

Dipping a cone costs more than you might expect. A medium chocolate-dipped cone is 460 calories, 140 more than a plain medium vanilla cone (320). Among the classic desserts, the Banana Split (520) is lighter than the Peanut Buster Parfait (710). The second table below has the full list by size.

What's on the Dairy Queen allergy menu?

Dairy Queen's allergy information is a set of letter codes next to each item on its nutrition pages at dairyqueen.com: E for egg, F for fish, M for milk, P for peanut, SF for shellfish, S for soy, T for tree nuts, W for wheat and SS for sesame. A code in parentheses means the item may contain that allergen through shared equipment or ingredients.

For example, the OREO Blizzard lists milk, soy and wheat. The Butterfinger and Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blizzards list milk, peanut and soy, and may contain egg, tree nuts and wheat. The Snickers Blizzard lists egg, milk, peanut and soy.

DQ is direct about the limits. It says it cannot guarantee any item is allergen-free, because cross-contact can happen in its kitchens. It also notes that fries can share fryers with fish and that its frying oil contains soybean oil. If you have a serious allergy, read the codes for your exact item and talk to the store before ordering.

Which DQ Blizzards are gluten-free?

None. Dairy Queen does not label any Blizzard gluten-free. DQ says gluten is in many of its products and cross-contact can easily happen during preparation.

The allergen codes show why. OREO and OREO Fudge Brownie Blizzards contain wheat. M&M's, Butterfinger, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Heath Blizzards don't list wheat as an ingredient, but they list it as "may contain." Even the Snickers Blizzard, which shows no wheat code, is not labeled gluten-free, because of that cross-contact risk.

DQ's own suggestion for people avoiding gluten is factory-made novelties in sealed wrappers: Dilly Bars, Buster Bars, Fudge Bars, Vanilla Orange Bars and Starkiss Bars. It advises against store-made Dilly Bars and Buster Bars sold in paper bags, because those can pick up gluten in the store.

Are Dairy Queen Blizzards dairy-free or vegetarian?

Dairy Queen Blizzards are not dairy-free. They are made from DQ soft serve, and every Blizzard on DQ's nutrition list carries the milk code. The same goes for cones, sundaes and shakes. DQ introduced a Non-Dairy Dilly Bar in 2020; ask your store whether it carries one, since availability varies.

DQ doesn't publish a vegetarian label for Blizzards. They contain no meat, but if you avoid animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin, check the ingredient list for your flavor on the item's page at dairyqueen.com, especially flavors with marshmallow or candy pieces.

How many calories are in a Dairy Queen meal deal?

Dairy Queen doesn't publish a single calorie number for its meal deals, because you choose the main, the drink and sometimes the dessert. To estimate, add up the parts. In the current $8 Meal Deal, a small sundae adds 240 to 300 calories depending on the topping. If you take the $2 Blizzard upgrade, a small Blizzard adds 560 to 860 instead, so the upgrade can double the dessert's calories.

The same method works for older bundles you may still be searching for, such as the 5 Buck Lunch or the $6 and $7 meal deals: look up the burger or strips, fries and drink on DQ's menu pages and add the dessert. For a lighter meal, pick a diet soda or water and keep the sundae rather than upgrading.

For kids, the 2-piece chicken strips are 280 calories, with 13 grams of protein and 640 milligrams of sodium, by DQ's official U.S. menu page. Pair them with a kids' vanilla cone (160) and the strips and treat come to 440 calories before sides and a drink.

What are the lowest-calorie treats at Dairy Queen?

The lowest-calorie treats at Dairy Queen are the kids' cones, at 160 calories for vanilla or chocolate. After that come a small Misty Slush (200), a small vanilla cone (220) and a small strawberry sundae (240). If you want a Blizzard, a mini is the smart choice: 340 calories for OREO, the lowest mini on DQ's list, against 600 for a small.

Seasonal flavors can be lighter too. The Pumpkin Pie Blizzard was the lowest-calorie medium on DQ's 2024 list at 720. For prices on all of these, see the Dairy Queen menu.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dairy Queen M&M's Blizzard gluten-free?

No. Dairy Queen's allergen codes list the M&M's Blizzard as containing milk and soy and possibly containing egg, peanut, tree nuts and wheat. DQ doesn't label any Blizzard gluten-free and warns that gluten cross-contact can easily happen in its stores. If you avoid gluten, DQ suggests its sealed, factory-made novelty bars instead.

How many calories are in a Peanut Buster Parfait?

A Dairy Queen Peanut Buster Parfait has 710 calories, according to DQ's official U.S. nutrition list. That's close to a medium Blizzard and more than a Banana Split, which comes in at 520. It contains milk and peanuts, so check DQ's allergen codes if either is a concern for you.

Where can I find Dairy Queen's official nutrition information?

Dairy Queen posts official nutrition and allergen codes on its website, dairyqueen.com, on the U.S. nutrition pages and on each menu item's page. The treat list we used is dated Aug. 26, 2024. New or seasonal items, like the Holiday Cookie Swap Blizzards, appear on their own item pages when they launch.
