What are Starbucks egg bites?
Starbucks egg bites are a pair of small, round egg cakes with a smooth, almost custard-like texture. Starbucks cooks them sous vide, a French technique where the eggs cook slowly in a temperature-controlled water bath, which is why they are soft all the way through instead of spongy like a baked frittata.
They arrived in early 2017. Because there is no bread, they appeal to people who want a warm, protein-forward breakfast without a sandwich. You will find them with the other hot items on the Starbucks breakfast menu, which is served all day while supplies last.
Starbucks egg bites flavors and prices
Starbucks egg bites typically cost about $5.95 for an order of two in our price list for the Kale & Mushroom flavor. A second flavor, Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper, was on the menu in 2025, but it is not in our price list, so check the app for its current price.
Flavors have changed over the years. Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper was one of the originals, and a kale and portabella mushroom flavor joined in 2021. The lineup at your store may differ, especially at licensed cafés.

What is in Starbucks egg bites?
Starbucks egg bites are built on eggs and cottage cheese, with cheese and a filling for each flavor. The base uses eggs, cottage cheese and Monterey Jack, and it also includes butter. The Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper version swaps whole eggs for egg whites and adds roasted red peppers, and the Kale & Mushroom version adds kale and mushrooms.
The cottage cheese is the quiet star. It adds protein and keeps the texture creamy, which is why most good copycat recipes use it.
Both flavors contain dairy and neither contains meat. For full ingredient and allergen details, open the item in the Starbucks app. We do not list calories here because we only publish numbers from Starbucks' own guide; see our Starbucks nutrition page for how to find them.
Are Starbucks egg bites worth the price?
At about $5.95, egg bites cost a little more than a Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap (about $5.75) and a little less than an Impossible Breakfast Sandwich (about $6.25). You are paying for the cooking method and the lack of bread rather than for more food.
They make the most sense in two cases. First, if you want a hot breakfast that skips bread. Second, if you are spending Stars: the 200-Star reward covers a hot breakfast item such as egg bites, up to $10. If you just want the cheapest filling bite, a Plain Bagel at about $2.95 costs half as much. Our Starbucks birthday reward page lists every Star level, and the full price list is on the Starbucks menu page.
| Item | Typical price | Has bread? |
|---|---|---|
| Kale & Mushroom Egg Bites | About $5.95 | No |
| Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap | About $5.75 | Yes (wrap) |
| Impossible Breakfast Sandwich | About $6.25 | Yes |
| Plain Bagel | About $2.95 | Yes |
How do I make Starbucks egg bites at home?
You can make copycat Starbucks egg bites at home with a blender, a muffin tin or silicone egg bite mold, and a pan of hot water. This is our own home recipe, not Starbucks' formula. It makes 12 bites, enough for six servings of two.
Ingredients: 6 large eggs, 1 cup full-fat cottage cheese, 1 cup shredded Gruyère, 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack, 1 cup chopped kale and 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms, sautéed until soft, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a pinch of black pepper.
Oven method:
- Heat the oven to 300°F and put a kettle on.
- Blend the eggs, cottage cheese, both cheeses, salt and pepper for about 30 seconds, until completely smooth. This is the step that gives the velvety texture.
- Grease the cups well and divide the kale and mushrooms among them. Pour in the batter until each cup is about three-quarters full.
- Set the tin or mold inside a larger baking pan and pour hot water into the outer pan until it comes about halfway up the sides.
- Bake 25 to 30 minutes, until the centers are just set. An instant-read thermometer should read 160°F.
- Rest 5 minutes before unmolding.
Sous vide method: divide the vegetables and batter among 4 oz canning jars, close them fingertip-tight and cook at 172°F for about 1 hour.
For an egg white version, use egg whites in place of whole eggs and swap the kale and mushrooms for roasted red pepper.
How to store and reheat homemade egg bites
Cool homemade egg bites, then refrigerate them in a covered container and eat them within 3 to 4 days. To reheat, microwave two bites for about 30 to 45 seconds, or warm them in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes. If you buy a packaged egg bite product at a grocery store, follow the heating directions on the box, since they vary by product.
