How do you get your free birthday drink from Starbucks?
You get the Starbucks birthday reward by being a Starbucks Rewards member with your birthday saved in your account. The reward then appears in the app around your birthday, and you apply it to an order like any other reward.
Here is the short version:
- Join Starbucks Rewards in the Starbucks app or on starbucks.com. Everyone starts at the Green level.
- Add your date of birth to your profile, and double-check it is correct.
- On your birthday, open the Rewards section of the app to find the offer.
- Add a drink or food item to your order and apply the reward, either in a mobile order or when you pay in the café.
The reward covers a beverage or a food item, so you are not limited to coffee. Because it is a single free item, it makes sense to spend it on something you would not normally buy. In our price list, a Caramel Macchiato runs about $6.15 and a White Chocolate Mocha about $6.45, while a Pike Place Roast is only about $3.25. Using the reward on the pricier drink roughly doubles what it is worth to you.
The exact rules on add-ons, sizes and which items qualify are shown on the reward itself in the app, so read the details before you order.
Starbucks birthday rewards by member level
Every member gets a birthday treat, but how long you have to use it depends on your level. Green members get a free drink or food item on their birthday. Gold members get a seven-day window, and Reserve members get 30 days.
That gap matters more than it sounds. If your birthday falls on a busy workday or a weekend away, a Green member could miss it, while a Gold member can use it later in the week. You reach Gold by earning 500 Stars in 12 months, which works out to about $500 of spending at Green's earning rate, before any bonus Stars. Most people should not chase a higher level just for the birthday window, but if you are close to 500 Stars anyway, it is a nice extra.
| Level | How to reach it | Stars per $1 | Birthday reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green | Starting level for all members | 1 | Free drink or food item on your birthday |
| Gold | 500 Stars in 12 months | 1.2 | Free birthday treat, 7-day window |
| Reserve | 2,500 Stars in 12 months | 1.7 | Free birthday treat, 30-day window |
How does Starbucks Rewards work in 2026?
Starbucks Rewards now has three levels, and the level you reach decides how fast you earn Stars. Green is where everyone starts, at 1 Star per dollar. Gold members earn 1.2 Stars per dollar, and Reserve members earn 1.7 Stars per dollar.
You move up based on Stars earned in a 12-month period: 500 for Gold and 2,500 for Reserve. Green members can also earn bonus Stars by reloading a Starbucks Card digitally, with 10 Stars for a reload of $30 or more and 25 Stars for $50 or more. That makes the Starbucks rewards card worth loading in bigger chunks if you already plan to spend the money there.
Star expiration changed too. Green Stars last six months, but any qualifying activity in a month, such as a purchase, a reload or redeeming a reward, extends them by a month. Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire. Gold members get at least four Double Star Days a year, and Reserve members get at least six, when the whole purchase earns double Stars.

What can you get with Starbucks Stars?
Starbucks Rewards has six redemption levels, from 25 Stars for a drink add-on to 400 Stars for merchandise. Each level has a dollar cap, which is the most the reward will cover.
The caps tell you something useful. Divide the cap by the Stars and every level is worth about 4 to 6 cents per Star at most. But you only get the full value if your item costs as much as the cap. A 200-Star reward covers up to $10, yet the handcrafted drinks in our price list cost about $5.25 to $6.45, so in practice you get roughly 3 cents per Star. The 100-Star reward is similar: a brewed coffee at about $3.25 gives you about 3.3 cents per Star, while a $4.25 Banana Nut Bread gets you closer to 4.3 cents.
The new 60-Star reward takes $2 off anything, which is about 3.3 cents per Star with no catch. So unless you are picking an item that costs close to a level's cap, the $2 discount is as good a use of Stars as any, and you can use it sooner. See the table for every level.
| Stars | What you get | Covers up to |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | Drink customization: extra espresso shot, syrup or cold foam | $1 |
| 60 | $2 off any purchase | $2 |
| 100 | Hot or iced brewed coffee or tea, bakery item, packaged snacks and more | $6 |
| 200 | Handcrafted drink such as a latte or cold brew, or a hot breakfast item | $10 |
| 300 | Sandwich, protein box or packaged coffee | $16 |
| 400 | Select Starbucks merchandise | $20 |
What are Free Mod Mondays at Starbucks?
Free Mod Mondays give every Starbucks Rewards member, at any level, one free drink modification on one select Monday each month. A modification is a change like an extra espresso shot, a syrup, non-dairy milk or cold foam.
In our price list, an extra shot or cold foam costs about $1.25, and oat, almond or soy milk or a syrup pump costs about $0.80. So a Free Mod Monday is worth about a dollar. Save your most expensive add-on for that day. Gold and Reserve members keep this perk and also get extra Double Star Days, which pay off best on a bigger order, such as a drink plus a sandwich.
How can you get free Starbucks coffee?
There are three honest ways to get free Starbucks coffee: free refills, a Star reward and your birthday reward.
- Refills. Since Jan. 27, 2025, U.S. cafés refill hot or iced brewed coffee and hot or iced tea for free during the same visit, as long as your first drink was ordered for here in a mug, glass or clean personal cup. Lattes, cold brew and Refreshers do not count.
- 100 Stars. This level covers a hot or iced brewed coffee or tea, a bakery item or packaged snacks, up to $6.
- Birthday. Your birthday reward can be any qualifying drink or food item.
The refill rule is the best value of the three if you can sit in the café. A Pike Place Roast at about $3.25 can become two or three cups at no extra cost.
Are there Starbucks coupons or promo codes?
Starbucks does not run public coupon codes that we could verify, so be wary of sites promising a Starbucks promo code. Real Starbucks deals show up in the Starbucks rewards app as personal offers, bonus Star challenges and seasonal promotions.
The best-known seasonal promotion is Red Cup Day, when Starbucks has given a free reusable holiday cup with the purchase of a holiday drink. Starbucks had not confirmed a 2026 date when we checked, though the holiday menu itself starts Nov. 5, 2026. Our Starbucks hours page tracks the holiday menu, and the full price list is on the Starbucks menu page.
Another practical way to save is to keep custom orders simple. Two add-ons can push a $6 drink past $8, so see our Starbucks secret menu page for what common builds really cost.
Frequently asked questions
Does Starbucks give you a free drink on your birthday?
Yes. Starbucks Rewards members get a free birthday treat, which can be a drink or a food item. Green members receive it on their birthday, Gold members have seven days to use it and Reserve members have 30 days. You need a Rewards account with your birthday saved to get the Starbucks birthday reward.
How do you redeem the Starbucks birthday drink?
Open the Starbucks app, go to Rewards and find the birthday offer. For a mobile order, add your drink and apply the reward at checkout. In the café, ask to use your birthday reward when you pay with your Rewards account. Read the reward details first to see which items and add-ons it covers.
Do you have to use the Starbucks birthday reward on your birthday?
It depends on your Starbucks Rewards level. Green members get the free item on their birthday itself. Gold members, who earned 500 Stars in the past 12 months, have a seven-day window, and Reserve members, who earned 2,500 Stars, have 30 days. Check the expiry shown on the reward in your Starbucks app.
Does reloading a Starbucks card earn Stars?
Yes. Under the 2026 Starbucks Rewards program, a digital reload of $30 or more earns 10 bonus Stars, and a reload of $50 or more earns 25 Stars. You still earn your normal Stars when you spend the money, so loading a larger amount at once earns more if you already shop at Starbucks.
